The mission of the new Global Challenges Division is to anticipate and address the intersection of intellectual property issues with global policy challenges in order to ensure that intellectual property and WIPO contribute more effectively to the collective search for solutions by the United Nations and the international community. The Director of the Global Challenges Division will be responsible for leading and developing a multi-disciplinary team to deliver the following:
(a) substantive analysis of the intellectual property-related aspects of the major global policy challenges facing the international community, including, for example, in the areas of climate change, food security, public health and biodiversity; anticipation of new issues; (b) identification of options to enhance WIPO’s contribution to addressing such challenges, within the framework of collective action and in close coordination with other United Nations and intergovernmental organizations; (c) facilitation and leadership of constructive debate between governmental, NGO and industry actors; (d) expert input to discussions in other international fora. |

(a) Advanced degree in life sciences. (b) At least 15 years of achievement within academic or international policy institutes or government, including published work in publications of international repute. (c) Extensive knowledge of UN global policy issues relating to sustainable development, climate change, food security, public health and biodiversity, and preferably of intellectual property questions in relation to these issues. (d) Familiarity with the work of WIPO. Knowledge of work on intellectual property–related issues by other intergovernmental organizations, including the World Health Organization, the Convention on Biodiversity, the World Trade Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization. (e) Experience of multilateral negotiations and the UN system. (f) Effective communicator and networker. Proven ability to communicate complex technical subject matter to non-specialist policy makers. Extensive experience of chairing scientific and policy debate at a senior level in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural fora. (g) Proven ability to lead and motivate a multi-cultural team. (h) Excellent written and spoken English or French, with fluency in the other. Working knowledge of at least one other UN language an advantage. |
