Associate Director - Merck Serono Ventures
Manages investments in products and/or technologies that are expected to have future strategic value for Merck Serono with the objective to create a unique asset base for Merck Serono's future R&D
Further raises the "Best Pharma" and "Best Partner" profile of Merck Serono in the international biopharmaceutical community through a strong networking to entrepreneurs and biotech investors
Supports Merck Serono strategy development by providing input from the VC/Biotech environment.
Main Tasks:

Generates deal flow through internal and external network of VCs, companies, academic institutes, advisors
Evaluates deal flow, performs technical and financial due diligence and coordinates with internal and external experts that support the diligence process
Negotiates equity investments in strategic assets on a global basis with responsibility and accountability for deal structure, deal terms, and appropriate communication to and alignment with all internal stake holders.
Performs valuation of deals via benchmarks and business cases
Establishes and manages relationships with academic partners / advisors to create access to specialized due diligence advisors for a wide range of opportunities
Co-ordinates with Global Research, Legal, IP, etc. where internal resources are needed to support due diligence
Drives projects to decisions by aligning key internal and external stakeholders via transparent communication.
Presents investment opportunities to senior management.
Serves as interface between invested companies and Merck Serono organization
Supports invested companies, where appropriate, with hands-on support in organizational, project management, IP, etc issues
Oversees monitoring of portfolio companies for appropriate time of recommendation to review by ESL / BD / M&A for 'Strategic Decision'
Relationship management with global biotech investment community; regular meetings to discuss investment opportunities, present Merck Serono strategic interests to VCs and screen VC
Portfolios for licensing and/or M/A opportunities that reflect Merck Serono's interests
Represents Merck Serono at international (investor) conferences
Identifies new areas of innovation and growth opportunities / investment trends that may be related to Merck Serono's core therapeutic areas
Identifies external opportunities at VC and biotech conferences, use network to source opportunities, and secure follow-up by Search & Evaluation team
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree
MBA
Doctorate (Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences)
Experience: 5 years +

PhD degree in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences. (Finance) MBA from international business school. At least 2 years expertise in VC or investment banking environment. At least 2 years of relevant pharma or biotech experience. Excellent English (Written, Oral, Negotiations). Fluency in one additional language is required, German and French a plus.
Strong analytical skills, ability to drive generation of business case/plan
Strong valuation skills and understanding of (preferred) equity and equity related structures commonly applied in the biotech industry. In depth understanding of corporate finance, capital budgeting and accounting, in particular with respect to the biotech industry. Project management skills, ability to lead multiple projects and to deliver on time. Negotiation experience. Excellent with Word, PPT, Excel, Project, Database applications, and Searches.

Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines. Willingness to learn and advance. Willingness to travel at least 30% and up to 60% depending on project load. Ability to drive projects to conclusion and entrepreneurial spirit. Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills, ability to lead cross functional international project teams and present to senior management. Problem solving and organization skills.
