As Group Leader - In Vivo Pharmacology Multiple Sclerosis - at Merck Serono Geneva Research Center you will :
contribute to the Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDD) Research strategy overall and therapeutic area of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), specifically
contribute to strategic and tactical research decisions and activities within the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) team
manage NDD in vivo Pharmacology for MS team in Geneva (5 people) and perform activities in order to fulfill the mission and the objectives of NDD Research
initiate, plan, direct and control the group research in vivo pharmacology activities to support the progression of NDD pipeline. You will direct a team of scientists, specialists and technicians through unit heads
work collaboratively with the other divisions of the MS team in Geneva, Early In Vivo PK/PD team in Geneva, the Director of Animal Experimentation and Welfare and team in Geneva, and the In Vivo Pharmacology team in PD/AD in Boston and Geneva
contribute, together with the other relevant Merck Serono Functions for the effective running of a matrix system of project management

Main Tasks & Responsibilities :
To clearly elaborate the research objectives to members of your group in line with the Neurodegenerative Diseases Research objectives and to monitor scientific achievements and standards in his/her area of responsibility in Geneva. This includes :
- To build and to maintain POM, POP, and POC models for validation of target association to disease using appropriate pharmacological tools: develop new EAE models, de/remyelinating models, models of axonal activity and damage and preservation in mice and rats
- To work closely with In Vivo PK/PD team for evaluation and validation of in vivo models using appropriate pharmacological tools
- To work closely with In Vivo PK/PD team for complete in vivo characterization of pharmacodynamic (PD) actions of identified therapeutic entities, in screening cascades of target-associated and disease-relevant animal models
- Application of multiple in vivo and ex vivo readouts, including biochemical & cellular biomarkers, physiological, histological, electrophysiological, and structural & molecular imaging
- Preclinical pharmacology support for development projects on an as needed basis
- To contribute scientific and project leadership in target validation and drug discovery & development
- To drive academic and clinical research collaborations in support of New Biological Entities and New Chemicals Entities in vivo testing and development
- To work closely with Animal Experimentation and Welfare team for ethical and legal aspects of animal research in Geneva

To lead research projects within the Multiple Sclerosis portfolio as a team leader
To manage a team (5 people); to be responsible for the allocation of resources and effective execution of activities required for approved projects and to develop any new resource required
To submit budget recommendations for the group. To manage the budget and control that it remains within the approved limits
To maintain your scientific current awareness at an internationally state-of-the-art recognized level, and apply new knowledge in his/her scientific activities. To participate to authorship of scientific and/or patent publications
To develop new techniques and potential areas of research within your fields of responsibility, formulating new project proposals, and initiating any necessary exploratory research to allow evaluation of the target and/or approach. To write concise reports on research activities as required
To have already established scientific network in the field of Multiple Sclerosis and to continue to establish external collaborations with key experts/technologies
To maintain network with the other relevant Merck/EMD Serono Functions, for the effective running of a matrix system of project management
Qualifications: Doctorate (Life Sciences or MD)
Experience: 10 years +
Languages: English : Speak / Write Fluently

Established and recognized expertise in the area of Multiple Sclerosis and EAE research
Several years (more than 10 years) of postdoctoral and/or drug discovery & development experience in Neuroscience Research. Experience developed from Target Validation to Selection of Preclinical Drug Candidates
Team leader of multifunctional projects (more than 3 years experience of drug discovery & development project team leader)
Role in Developing External Collaborations
Contribution to the Therapy Area Strategy
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Proven management competencies (leadership, influencing and decision making skills)
