The position is located in the Media Programmes Section of the Department of Communication and Public Information (DCOMM).
DCOMM works in collaboration with technical units in the Geneva Office and the regions to advise, plan and coordinate ILO communication and knowledge-sharing activities. DCOMM establishes and implements communication-related activities, products and events to communicate the work of the ILO to its constituents, partner institutions and the general public.
The Media Programmes Section provides global media coverage of the activities of the ILO, the Director-General and other officials, as well as ILO committees and bodies, reports and studies, meetings and special events, and answers media requests. The media team communicates through print, electronic and broadcast products, as well as briefings, press conferences and other public events. In all cases the products intended for the news media must be newsworthy or outcome driven in order to maximize the interest of journalists. Description of Duties
Specific duties: 1. Develop and maintain relations with Francophone media. 2. Produce information materials such as press kits, press releases fact sheets, feature articles and brochures for the media and other target audiences in French and/or English. 3. Write and edit content for the Web in both French and English.
These specific duties are aligned with the ILO relevant generic job description, which includes the following generic duties: 1. Cover the work of a programme or group of programmes, identify public information needs and opportunities, and develop communication/public information strategies. 2. Identify the need for, prepare, and produce information such as brochures, press releases, contributions to audio/visual programmes and articles for the media, NGOs and other groups to promote greater understanding and support for the organization. 3. Coordinate and ensure the dissemination of information products. Contribute to multi-media and other promotional campaigns and special events. 4. Write, edit and revise material for distribution, ensuring conformance to approved information policies and standards as well as professional journalistic style, accuracy and objectivity. 5. Provide technical advice to senior officials and/or public information staff in the field on the most effective public information and communication methods and approaches. 6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication channels with mass media representatives, news services, editors, etc. to encourage accurate and favourable reporting of the organization's activities. 7. Organize media coverage and arrange for interviews and briefings. Respond to media enquiries, organize seminars and make presentations to a variety of groups on the activities of the organization. 8. Administer the computerized needs of the department, prepare materials for the internet and web-sites, and develop and maintain media and other contacts lists. 9. Act as spokesperson for the programme area(s) and the department at public information meetings, conferences and press briefings. Make presentations to various groups on activities of the organization. |

Advanced university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, liberal arts or other relevant discipline, or its equivalent. Experience Seven years of professional experience in media, public information, writing for the web or related fields of work, of which at least three years at the international level. Languages Excellent command of French and English. Competencies Excellent journalistic writing and presentation skills. Experience of writing for the Web. Proven ability to develop working relationships with media professionals - existing contacts within Francophone media an asset. Demonstrated ability to develop and oversee a public information/communication programme of activities. Ability to evaluate information needs and to provide appropriate and targeted information accordingly. Ability to act as spokesperson when required. Very good knowledge of the organization's mandate and its programme of activities. Experience of working for an International Organization an asset. Excellent analytical skills. Sound political judgement. Good negotiating skills. Ability to conduct interviews. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to adapt messages to culturally diverse audiences. Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines. The ability to work in a multicultural environment and gender-sensitive behaviour and attitudes are also required. |
