Local Head Chemical Sciences
Technical Sciences conducts early stage Technical Research and Development supporting projects from Lead Optimization through POC / Phase IIA. This encompasses profiling clinical candidates, optimization of synthetic routes for selected compounds and supply of API for preclinical and clinical investigations. Technical Sciences also develops and supplies formulation for preclinical and clinical studies and designs the final market formulation. All supply follows international GLP and GMP regulations.

The position holder supports timely, efficiently, scientific-effectively and operational the Disease Biology Area (DBA) and the Life Cycle (LC) projects within the area of responsibility. In addition, he/she develops and implements scientific excellence in Chemical Synthesis (CS) in alignment and context to Global CS, Global Technical Sciences (TS) and overall Roche R&D strategy. The Local Head Chemical Sciences reports to Global Head Technical Sciences

Key Accountabilities :

Scientific Leadership
Ensure high quality scientific and strategic input to DBA and LC projects and timely delivery to portfolio projects
Support DBLT with appropriate information for project and/or portfolio decisions
Enable seamless transition of projects from Discovery Chemistry respectively to Technical Development
Drive sustained functional excellence in Chemical Synthesis by tracking scientific and technical trends and opportunities and targeted investment in new technologies and knowledge sharing / generation platforms.
Ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory expectations and requirements (GMP & EH&S) as applicable within the Chemical Synthesis remit

Budget & Capacity Management
Manage the allocated budget to deliver the agreed commitments to the DBAs, LCTs and functional excellence strategies including use of cross site work package allocation
Ensure optimal use of established Centers of Excellence and external vendors in Chemical Synthesis / Technical sciences
Maintain and develop effective and efficient structures and processes in Chemical Synthesis

Line Responsibility
Ensure availability of required skill set (quality, expertise)
Lead goal setting and performance management in Chemical Synthesis Basel
Drive people development across whole department in close collaboration with local and global HR functions.
Implement and maintain effective and efficient interfaces with relevant stakeholders in Pharma R&D, e.g. Medicinal Chemistry, Technical Development and DBLTs and LCTs.
